COURT OF COMMON PLEAS, NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, PA
The Criminal Trial Process
Of the 3,000 plus criminal cases brought annually to the court, the great majority are concluded within a year, and often within months of the offense.

Intermediate Punishment and ARD Dispositions of convicted offenders in place of jail terms have provided incentives for quick resolution of many of the cases.

Serious offenders, upon conviction, present the need for costly and more severe punitive measures.

Our courts are designed to assure constitutional protection to all citizens called to answer criminal charges; to impose just sentences; to punish and rehabilitate offenders; and to protect society as the law allows, in cases brought before the Court.

Court management of all phases of criminal trials employs a large percentage of the court’s time and efforts.
